Description
Canadian 1964 Centennial Charlottetown Quebec Silver Dollar. This coin was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences, which marked the beginning of discussions that eventually led to the formation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867.
On the obverse (front) side of the coin is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as she appeared at 27 years of age, wearing a wreath and facing right. The portrait was designed by Mary Gillick and engraved by Myron Cook. The inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA MG” appears around the edge of the coin. This Latin inscription means “Elizabeth II, Queen by the grace of God”.
On the reverse (back) side of the coin is a unique design featuring the French fleur-de-lis, the Irish shamrock, the Scottish thistle, and the English rose, representing the four founding nations, France, Ireland,Scottland and England. This is surrounded by the legend “CHARLOTTETOWN • QUÉBEC”, the dates “1864” and “1964”, and the value of the coin at the bottom. The design was created by Dinko Vodanovic and engraved by Thomas Shingles. The edge of the coin is milled.
The coin is made of fine silver and has a diameter of 36.07 mm. It was struck at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, Canada. It is a valuable collectible and a tribute to an important moment in Canada’s history.
